The Bonn Challenge

On the second of September 2011, a core commitment to restore 150 million hectares of lost forests and degraded lands worldwide by 2020 has been launched at a ministerial conference in Bonn.

New analysis by IUCN estimates that restoring 150 million hectares would be worth US $ 85 billion per year to national and global economies.

During the conference, leaders have defined pathways to realise this ambitious goal. You can read more about the Bonn Challenge by clicking

Global Partnership on Forest and Landscape Restoration

In the space of a few centuries, mankind has removed more than half of the Earth's original forest cover. Every year, a further area the size of Greece is lost (FAO, 2005). The world's biodiversity and climate, and the livelihoods of millions of people are under serious threat. However, all over the world, people have started to restore their forested landscapes. Hence, degraded forests have become landscapes of opportunities, and the scale of this opportunity is immense. More than two billion hectares of the world's deforested and degraded landcapes are likely to offer potential for restoration - a vast opportunity to reduce poverty, improve food security, reduce climate change, and conserve biodiversity.
